The Ithaca Cup - Saturday, August 22nd

Our annual grude match with the gentlemen of Battlefleet Ithaca is coming in about a month: Saturday, August 22nd. We'll start around 12:00 noon, take a break for dinner, and play until it's time to go home (usually 9-11pm or so).

Battlefleet Ithaca and Battlefleet SWA will play in a team head-to-head open format, with victory to the team with the most wins. As usual, we are happy to take on as mercenaries any SFB players who would like to join us. Team SWA lost last year, but we're itching for the chance to redeem ourselves. The losing team, as per tradition, will pay to have the trophy engraved, and will present it to the winning team at the SFB tournament at Council of Five Nations in October.

If you're interested, please contact Peter Bakija at pdb6 /at/ lightlink.com and he'll tell you everything you need to know.

Have computers at the event?

Have computers at the event? I'll be glad to fly for either side that wants me if I can participate via SFBOL.

Wireless on campus

I wouldn't be at all surprised if there was a wireless connection available to do that.

Team SWA for Ithaca

Confirmed so far:
Rigley
Rocque
Cunero
Cheng

Maybe more. Maybe two vehicles!

More here soon,

Travis

Dave,
I talked to Travis today. Apparently he is marooned in Oneonta with limited access to the internet. Do you take Route 88 on your way to Ithaca, and doesn't it go right through there?

-Andy

Carpooling with Travis

Yes, just got an email from Travis today. We will make plans to pick him up on the way. It looks like he's just a few minutes off the highway, so no biggie. We'll get him to Ithaca.

mercenary for hire

I'll be there to play for whoever. Sarah is coming along, and may even play a game too.

Brian

Did we ever figure out if we

Did we ever figure out if we could Goldwin Smith has wireless?
Paul could be available if we verify that and someone brings a laptop.
Anyone know? Bakija?

Oh, hey--yeah, you need to

Oh, hey--yeah, you need to have cornell access to get wireless in Goldwin Smith. So if there is a Cornell person with a laptop, gold! But I'm not him. Maybe Ken Stuart?

So. Since we have no

So. Since we have no confirmation that someone in our group has the required level of nerdiness to get on the net at Goldwin Smith, I say Paul is free to plan his day in California as he sees fit!

Five from SWA for Ithaca

Jason "The Baron" Murphy is coming too. So we've got 5 in our snug, environmentally-friendly carpool.

Ithaca Cup Parking

Peter said - Message #1

But parking is weird--you need to park next to the Johnson Museum of Art, which is across the arts quad from Goldwin Smith--the Goldwin Smith parking lot is closed and being turned into a building. Go towards Goldwin Smith, and you'll see a bunch of "road closed" signs, which are true, but the road closes right after the Johnson Museum parking lot.

Please note that this weekend we have a new class arriving on campus,
so traffic and parking will be even worse than usual.

See http://www.cornell.edu/cuinfo/specialconditions/
for details.

Follow Peter's suggestions if you can, but generally this special time
of chaos means that although there are no parking spaces to be found,
you won't get tickets if you park in places that are usually off
limits, such as large lawns where family cars get parked as students
move in.

Good luck... come early. Goldwin Smith Hall is on the east side of the
Arts Quad and generally easy to find.

So I just got the following from Ben Stein, in regards to parking at Cornell:

For anyone driving to Games Club for the foreseeable future:
- University Avenue is *CLOSED* between Chi Phi and East Avenue. You cannot get into the Central Avenue/Art Museum parking lot the usual way (but read on...)
- The Sibley Hall lot remains closed, and will remain closed until at least 2011. And probably after that.
- There is a temporary parking expansion by the art museum, on a temporary driveway connecting University Avenue at Chi Phi to Central Avenue. Watch the signs in this lot as some of the spaces are reserved. This temporary driveway is the only way to get into the Central Avenue parking lot.
- The Central Avenue lot remains open, but *please note* that the spaces between McGraw Hall and Morrill Hall are now night-and-weekend restricted. Don't park there unless you want a ticket or a tow (or have a U permit). McGraw and Morrill are the second and third building on your left after you pass the art museum, respectively.
- You can park at Risley (now a "Y" lot) and walk across the Thurston Avenue bridge, which isn't terrible.
- You can park at the bottom of the slope and walk up, which may not be a pleasant experience.
- You can park at the AD White house on East Avenue. Good luck.

The map with this information can be found at:

(DC says this last pdf is a good map, and helps a lot - print it!)

See a bunch of you tomorrow!

Ithaca Cup Results

So we just held the 8th (?) Annual Ithaca Cup Team Tournament in sunny Ithaca, New York, and Team Ithaca narrowly edged out Team SWA for a win, 10 games to 8. Our annual Team Tournament is a friendly grudge match between team Ithaca and Team SWA from Schenectady (and the occasional mercenary), where we play round robin duels, and the team with the most wins is the victor. 15 people managed to brave the endless seas of Cornell Freshmen and their parents to play SFB tournament duels till their eyes bled. The Teams and overall records were:

Team Ithaca:
-Ken Stuart HYD 1-2
-Peter Bakija GRN 1-2
-Chris Proper TKR 1-1
-Steve Wampler KLI 2-0
-Andrew Sackett SEL 3-1
-Courtenay Footman GBS 2-0
-Howard Sanders NEO 0-1
-Andy Koch LYR 0-1

Team SWA:
-Jonh Rigley WAX (gDbb) 2-0
-Dave Cheng HYD 1-1
-Travis Cunero FED 0-3
-Jason Murphy FED 2-3
-Eric Rocque ZIN 0-3
-Brian Evans TKR 1-0
-Andy Koch LYR 2-0

Team Played a Demo Game:
-Sarah Rasmussen 1-0

Due to trickling in uneven players, Andy played for Team Ithaca his first game, and then switched over to Team SWA for his next two games. That he lost the game for Team Ithaca and then won both games for Team SWA should in no way be taken as a slanted result :-)

A great time was had by all. Pizza was delivered and eaten. Jason Murphy won the "5 Games In One Day" Iron Man award. Dave played a demo/learning game with Sarah, who wins the award for "Spent A Whole Day In A Room With Sackett And Didn't Kill Him".

The match results for data purposes:
-Dave HYD over Peter GRN
-John WAX over Ken HYD
-Chris TKR over Travis FED
-Sackett SEL over Eric ZIN
-Brian TKR over Andy LYR
-Steve KLI over Jason FED
-Sackett SEL over Travis FED
-Jason FED over Howard NEO
-Courtenay GBS over Eric ZIN
-Steve KLI over Travis FED
-John WAX over Chris TKR
-Andy LYR over Peter GRN
-Sackett SEL over Dave HYD
-Jason FED over Sackett SEL
-Andy LYR over Ken HYD
-Courtenay GBS over Jason FED
-Ken HYD over Eric ZIN
-Peter GRN over Jason FED

Jason was playing the fast "Get the best shot you can, fire the Photons, and win if you roll well" plan, so all of his games were quick, and when the plan worked, he won. Sackett went a surprising 3-1 in the Selt of all things (losing one game to Jason's Fed, when his plan worked...), killing Dave Cheng's Hydran through the pure superior play that comes from doing 30 damage at range 10. With Seltorian guns. But that is, after all, Sackett's way. I went 1-2 in my Gorn (getting wacked by Dave's Hydran, Andy's Lyran, and killing Jason's Fed when he rolled exactly average with a range 7 Fed shot), continuing my year long run of having lost my mojo.

Your mojo, I found it

I heard a knock on the door this morning Peter. It was your mojo, looking quite dishevelled. I'm nursing it back to health, and I'll bring it to Council in October. Hopefully it doesn't get attached to me.

That Damned Mojo!

Man. I gotta get that back. Treat it well, would you?

Ithacan Hospitality

Many thanks to Team Ithaca for their usual warm hospitality on Ithaca Cup day. We were happy to bring a full team of 5 from SWA, supplemented by some expensive mercenaries.

We especially appreciate Andy Koch's "mercenary" attitude: lose first game to an SWA mercenary, see the light, switch to the other side, and then proceed to win two games for his new employer. The check is in the mail, Andy!

We also thank Cornell for having freshman-move-in weekend coincide with the Ithaca Cup once again. Parking and traffic were a pain, but it was worth it. With road construction, we had to wind our way around the campus the long way to leave. Eric Rocque, our navigator, "accidentally" took us past a series of house parties in full swing. Was it just our eyes playing tricks, or were there really four young female co-eds in skimpy summer attire for every college guy we saw as we drove by? If only we were younger...

Hope to see even more of you join us next year!
