..For several years, since I was 17-18, in 03'-04', I heard of Supplement #2, read what I could about it from Don Miller, and finally got a copy of it in '10.

Here, is data on the 2Xe ships of Supplement #2. Most of it will be brought up Gradually. Make SSDs of them, I did so for the Federation XCA and XCC.

Drones have adjustable speeds, there are two type, equivalent with the VII and VIII from Module X1.

2Xe Shuttles have 6 Hit Points, 6 Points of Shielding that can be repaired at 1 point a turn, and can move at up to Speed 10.

They have 2 Chaff Packs, and 2 Points of ECM.

Does anyone have any basic construction data for base stations, battle stations and star bases?

The Fed XCA/XCC sounds like

The Fed XCA/XCC sounds like the one that TFG did before ADB came about and took over the rains. That version is the one that ADB disavowed from what I understand. I recognized the 16 ph-1's as I use to have that suppliment back in the mid-80's.

I was one heck of a cruiser. Superior to the current canon XCA. It also had OL phasers.

Early XCAs

Yeah, I loved those early X cruisers. Too bad they toned them down. The overload capability for the phasers was a good idea in spite of what ADB thought. X cruisers were supposed to be able to blow anything previous out of space. I liked the 5 batteries per battery box feature, too. It was kind of nice to see how an X cruiser could totally devastate an old generation dreadnought.

X rules allowed old SSDs to still be used; they just had new capabilities.

I still use the old style X ships and rules for them. I, too, felt that X-ships were supposed to be the baddest thing in space, able to tear apart bigger ships of non-X varieties.

So just like the neutered Andromedans, our group discarded the neutered X-ships as well. Granted, we didn't use the X-ships much, but we did use them on occasion.

I know that 'they' said overloaded phasers were broke...but were they? Or was this a TFG thing that ADB wanted purged? Like mentioned above, X ships were suppose to be the next big leap in ship design. I suppose canon X ships are okay, though I haven't played them really. But gotta admit that a Fed CA with 16 ph-1's is just a beautiful thing. For that matter so is a Klingon Battle Cruiser with 6 disruptors :)

Not broken, but different.

The "issue" with overloaded phasers wasn't so much that they were broken, it's that they didn't do what I think was intended. When people realized you could overload your phasers, run right up into the other ship's face and pulverize them with overloaded phasers....and then do it again the very next turn, people started screaming "broken".

It's the TACTIC that is broken, not the weapon itself.

If you want your X-ship be act like a Hydran, then that's how you run it and you run in and blow the doors off other ships at super close range with overloaded phasers.

I think the primary thing that lead to the neutering of the X-ships, just like what happened to the Andromedans, is that they could destroy regular ships with impunity. With all of the bonuses of X-ships, and the overloaded phasers, they could chew through non-X ships like they were gummy bears. People made the mistake of flying a couple of non-X ships against an X ship and getting their ass handed to them and they thought the X ship was broken. What better thing to blame than the overloaded phasers, since that is typically what blew non-X ships up. So the overloaded phasers get axed.

X-ships were supposed to be kick ass. X ships were originally quite kick ass. From what I've seen, the new X ships are only slightly better than non-X ships now. So just like how the Andromedans were supposed to be an all powerful extra-galactic menace that almost takes over the entire Alpha Quadrant with a small fleet, the X-ships were supposed to forever change the way the wars were fought. Both were short changed in the "Doomsday" edition. (It was a doomsday for the Andromedans and X-ships)

Probe launchers

Why does everything have a probe launcher? Okay, I can see navy ships having one since they may be needed to investigate something. I guess my question is why do tugs and cargo ships have them? These ships usually travel known transport routes to and from bases and planets. They don't go exploring. If do go off the normal routes, then there is reason to send an escort (frigate or detroyer) which has search capabilities.

Lack of imagination

Someone somewhere decided that essentially everything had to have exactly one probe launcher, no matter how stupid or useless. And nobody thought to query that. A few ships (survey ships, large exploration freighters, the Lion DN) have 2, but otherwise one. It wouldn't be so bad if the thing were any use in a fight, but no...

Raw Deal

When I think back to those days I get a little miffed. We all felt a little duped into buying product that was later made out to be really playtest material. Remember the direct fire drone rules? That was more wasted money spent! It was like buying a book in a storied series only to have the author re-publish the volume with a different, "real" story line and tell everyone the other plot thread never happened!
I saw a ton of people leave the game altogether over the X2 fiasco.

I 100% agree with Aegis_777! Is this sort of thing standard fare with modern gaming? I remember many of the Avalon Hill wargames having options in The General and some even having rules clarifications, but SFB is the only game I've ever come across that's had the "ongoing playtest" approach taken with it. I suppose if that had all been explained up front it would've made things different. I guess that's what happens with something as complicated as what SFB turned into.

Master Ship Book

Not to beat a dead horse but anyone wonder if the master starship book is what many players are waiting to buy and then end their buying of SFB stuff? There really is nowhere the game can go anymore and I will likely call it a day with that purchase. I suppose if X2 were republished for real with fully tested ships I would buy that too. Even so I created my own master ship book by consolidating the R sections and it works pretty well. I do not really see why they are taking so long other than the realization that many players will opt out of any future products. This is pure speculation of course.

I agree....SFB has always been a unique animal in that regard. What we call poor product planning was touted as "listening too much to customers". It was our fault they kept printing bad rules and errata up the ying yang, in other words. I think it was the only real source of revenue for ADB for so long that desperation set in for new product. A white knight buyer needs to come along with a fat bank roll and turn the game into a labor of love with updated artwork, better background fiction and quality production that is post 1985. Mongoose is a start I guess.

The supplement #2 CA/CC just seems much better balanced overall and more in line with what an X ship should be. I used to have Supp #2 and occasionally see it online for a high price. Glad you've taken the time to put the stats here and I appreciate it!

I've now got a working SFCII Orion Pirates, and modded some of Don Miller's Ships, a handful of new classes, some Andromedans, the Gorn Warp-Refitted Battleship, the Neo-Tholian Battleship, and the Federation and Klingon XCAs, I flew the XCAs, they're kinda weak, and some of the old Supplement #2 Criticisms floated to the surface again.

Then again, the game does have Overloadable Ph-Xs and new Weapons.
