RUT 1 - Deadline for submission August 15, 2009

RUT, of course, stands for "Real Underground Tournament." In your submissions, feel free to suggest a better name for it
Rules:

1. Standard single elimination tournament on SFBOL.

2. Prizes: 1st - $100, 2nd - $50, 3rd -$25 (the losers of the semi-finals will play each other for third).

3. Entry fee - $0 (inaugural event, so I'll just put up the prize money and not take entry fees).

4. Deadline for entry submissions is August 15th.

5. How to register: email to aaeamdar at yahoo dot com with SFBOL nickname and your ship choice (and, optionally, suggestions for "R" and "A").

6. This will go forward if at least 32 people register.

*See Gaffes and Drama for old thread related to this Tournament.

As much as everyone loves

As much as everyone loves sticking it to The Man, naming said tournament RAT1 is likely to, more than anything, just confuse people. Which might very well be your goal. But if it isn't, I'd suggest changing the name to something different. Like RUT1 (Real Underground Tournament 1) or POT1 (Paul Online Tournament 1) or AOT1 (Alternate Online Tournament 1). Or something.

Just throwing that out there.

A fine suggestion

include it in your email signing up for the tournament. I particularly like RUT.

Tournament with Fees.

I can't seem to find the latest Eula, but I'm pretty sure having a tournament with Fees will be against it.

Gregg Dieckhaus

The "fee" is $0

but perhaps you were talking about possible future events where prize money comes from entry fees rather than my pocket. We'll cross that bridge if we come to it.

Cash prizes

I'm not sure that cash prizes are really what's going to draw people to the tournament. More than anything else, I'm hoping to see some actual changes made to balance ships, and freshen up the tournaments. I'd love to see a set of war cruisers balanced for a war cruiser only tourney.

Balance

Yeah, I generally agree that there are some changes to be made, though really with the exception of the Andro, no ADB sanctioned TC is really that bad off nor too good anymore. We are really looking at tweaks that will "re-order" ships, but not really make any substatial difference in overall play balance.

An all CW tournament could certainly be interesting, and SFBOL would make testing along those lines easy enough. Of course, as things stand now, even the current tournament has 5 of the ships as CWs.

I'll create a forum for you to discuss your ideas of a CW tournament. If it gets enough interest, we can all spend some time coming up with some starter ships.

Yep, Definitely I was talking

Yep, Definitely I was talking about future events.

"Ditto"

I strongly agree with Romwe, for me personally cash prizes would have no influence on my decision to play an event (and I'll happily donate any prizes back to the organizers). What I'm after is some fresh tournament challenges (War Cruisers for all races is a great idea IMO) and to play in events that build up prestige and history! For example, if I did well and was lucky enough to win RUT#1 (or whatever u call it) it wouldn't mean much to me at the time but if you got to RUT#20 then I would find it quite satisfiying to be in the history books as the champion of RUT#1!

I'm In

Sign me up. I'm in a Gorn. Which is no surprise, so everyone else signing up, take the ATC!

Me play!

I'll sign up, TKR me please

I am sneaky.

My choice of ship is secret. But I will say that it is a highly unmaneuverable converted freighter with mucho discretionary power.

Punch Bug!

Hmmmm ... I was planning on a less than maneuverable custom job, although it probably has less discretionary power than yours. :)

August 15 Deadline

"Current Participant List:
Ken Burnside
Marcus Gingrich
Gregg Deickhaus
Leslie Richardson
Andy Koch"

I have a feeling that the deadline will need to be pushed back a bit at our current rate of entry. I'll bug Brook and get him to sign up as well.

Oh yeah, my name is "Giegerich", not "Gingrich". Not exactly a simplistic German name and easy to mess up ;)

What I will most likely do

is run the tournament w/o the prize money, with however many we get, if we don't hit our goal of 32 by August 15. I am up for suggestions, of course, but my reasoning was that if we have a small turnout, then we have a fast tournament, so RUT 2 would start sooner.

16?

Do you think we'll at least get 16 players in the next 8 days? That would be a good number for starters. And I could care less about the prize money myself. An additional SFBOL tournament is prize enough IMO.

well

it's already bigger than Origins. :)

I hope we get some late entries. It would be nice to get to at least 16.

Did you see uptopic that

Did you see uptopic that bakija and Akira joined via posting here.?

I will be joining as well

Just have to get a few minutes to pick a ship and send you an e-mail Paul. Will probably do it tonight or Sunday.

I'm in

Let's get enough people, so I can take Paul's money.

Ditto.

Ditto.

I'll join

I'll certainly play as well. One thing about sign ups, I didn't even know that this community existed until I saw a link about it in a swa email (I'm not all that observant) so it is possible that lots of other folks who might play don't know about it either. It is tricky because formal invites will probably start a fight with the powers that be, but if the number of players are low it might just be because they don't know about it.

One other thing about entry fees and prize money. I don't mind paying for a well run tourny, it is lots of work after all to run one after all, but other casual or new players might be turned off by being asked to pay when they know they have no chance of coming close to winning. It is one thing to pay for a FTF tourny where you can play lots of fun games, but most players with less skill (such as myself) sign up for RATs knowing that they are going to play one maybe two games, and then get knocked out by the sharks.

I'm suggesting that if a tourny is going to have a fee associated with it, it might be a good idea to use a patrol format (or something like it) so that less skilled players (again such as myself) feel as if they get their money's worth. Just something to consider - I'd sign up either way but a tourny of all sharks is fine for the sharks, but not good for getting new players if they have to pay for one game.

Patrol? Yeah, or swizz style.

Patrol? Yeah, or swizz style.

Swiss is in your future

for fee or fee-free, with or without prizes, Swiss is pretty much my favorite format to run tournaments. Because I actually want to play and not just Judge, I will be hoping to get some rotating going on, but on one of the ones I run, it will be Swiss. I ran a Swiss format a number of years ago on SFBOL and thought it went very well.

Please inform this ignorant man....

what "Swiss format" is.

Thanks

It's apretty solid format ,

It's apretty solid format , but it has some holes in it.

Swiss in a nutshell

8 players, 4 rounds, to make it easy.

round 1: 4 people at 1-0, 4 at 0-1.

Round 2: the 4 1-0 are matched, the 4 0-1 are matched: results - 2 at 2-0, 4 at 1-1, 2 at 0-2.

Round 3: the two at 2-0 are matched, the 4 at 1-1 are matched, the two at 0-2 are matched: results 1 at 3-0, 3 at 2-1, 3 at 1-2, 1 at 0-3. Four Round 4 you can either discard the bottom four (I will here for ease) or include them if ranking below the winner is desired.

Round 4 the one at 3-0 and the 3 at 2-1 are matched: 1 possible result - winner is 4-0, 2 at 3-1, one at 2-2. Other possible result: thee at 3-1, one at 2-2. Then you need a tiebreaker rule or a playoff.

So, obviously, if I had it set up at 8 players, 3 rounds, then it's just like single elimination if all you are interested in is the winner.

The two nice things about Swiss are 1. People play more games - no one and out; and 2. Swiss can be run with any number of players and any number of rounds. There is no need to concern yourself with powers of 2 or BYEs.

In MtG they use Swizz to sort

In MtG they use Swizz to sort out the top eigth players, who then, once the swizz is over, face each other in single elimination.

I like the sound of Swiss Style

We use the same system in the Steamrollers when the local group play Warmachine. One nice thing about it for less experienced players is that the tourny tends to stratify such that the better players tend to rise to the top, the medium players to the middle, and the less skill to the bottom. That way by the end everyone tends to play against players of around the same skill, which is nice for everyone (as much fun as losing badly in every RAT is, it is also nice to play in competitive close games too). Also it give you something to shoot for, ie. I was 10th place last tourny, maybe I can make 8th place in the next.

There are surely shortcomings as well (players dropping as soon as they lose, and more games means a bigger time commitment) but still it is something to mull about - especially if the tournys have an entrance fee.

I'm OK with Swiss style RUT

I'm cool with it. A different approach from the RATS could do some good.

Thanks for the explanation...

That was very helpful, thank you. I understand now :-)

I haven't done tourneys in a long time, so I've missed out on a whole era of lingo.

I will play too.

I will play too.

In!

As Zin, in you please, looking forward to it.

Did not notice til today

If there is still time sign me up in the B1 Shark.

Ken > Tugger

Ken played a pretty solid game, and I pretty much messed up the 2nd turn by the numbers, and make it easy for him...Glad I get a 2nd chance to try to play a decent game...
